Rebecca King Announces Candidacy For Atlanta Mayor

Buckhead businesswoman says she wants to stamp out rising crime and rejuvenate the city by bringing people together.

ATLANTA β€” Buckhead businesswoman Rebecca King has thrown her hat into the ring as a candidate for Atlanta mayor.

The CEO of insurance documentation firm Cover Your Assets and former Atlanta City Council District 7 candidate formally announced her bid to run City Hall late Thursday. She will join the five candidates already running, including former two-term Mayor Kasim Reed, City Council President Felicia Moore, council members Andre Dickens and Antonio Brown, and attorney Sharon Gay.

When Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced in May that she would not seek a second term, a scramble started among potential candidates. Moore had already announced her intent to Challenge Bottoms, but others, including now King, saw an opportunity to address one predominant concern β€” rising crime β€” that is threatening a divide between the City and its most prominent neighborhood, Buckhead.

β€œI’m running for mayor because just like you, I’m disappointed with the amount of violent crime taking place throughout Atlanta,” King said. β€œWe all want a safer, strong and accountability-driven future for Atlanta. Join me on this journey to make our communities the most viable and economically sustainable for generations to come.”

King is a long-time Atlanta resident who is an active member of Livable Buckhead, the Neighborhood Planning Unit (NPU-B), and the Buckhead Condo Alliance. She co-chairs the Midtown Quality of Life & BCA joint committee to stop bar and street disturbances and served for two years as secretary and board director of the North Buckhead Civic Association.

King ran unsuccessfully against Buckhead’s current Atlanta City Councilmember Howard Shook in 2017. She says she wants to apply her experience to rejuvenate the City.

β€œAs a longtime resident, I’ve watched our city go through many changes,” King said. β€œWe must come together as one Atlanta and build upon what our city offers that works well and rejuvenate what is not working. I will bring my years of community involvement and business acumen to ensure that Atlanta is run efficiently and your voices are being heard.”
