Tanyard Creek Has 2nd Sewage Spill in 2 Months

In July, the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper discovered and put a stop to a 10,000-gallon raw sewage spill into Tanyard Creek, which flows through the Collier Hills neighborhood. A month later, the organization discovers that the creek has another sewage spill.

According to the CRK's Sept. 5 newsletter, the bacteria levels in the creek have since subsided, and there was no report of a large fish kill such as the one caused by the July sewage spill.

The nearly 10,000-gallon raw sewage spill in July was the result of the shutdown of a private garbage lift station at a nearby apartment complex. The electricity to the complex had been disconnected due to nonpayment, cutting off power to the lift station, where waste dripped into the creek instead of the city's sewer system.

CRK recently attended a Collier Hills neighborhood meeting with city officials to provide an update on the situation and will continue our weekly monitoring at multiple locations in the creek.
