Uber Driver Cleared of Attack Reinstated

The driver will be picking up passengers on New Year's Eve after police determined he had nothing to do with the attack, a report says.

ATLANTA, GA -- The Uber driver who was accused of beating up and robbing a passenger is back behind the wheel after Atlanta police determined he wasn’t at the scene with the alleged beating occurred and had no involvement in the incident.

Marcus Lewis told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Thursday afternoon that he had been reinstated by Uber following an investigation conducted by Atlanta police and Uber.

A police statement released Tuesday afternoon says investigators β€œare certain that the Uber driver did not participate in any robbery,” noting he was on another trip when the alleged robbery took place. Furthermore, police haven’t concluded that the victim was robbed at all.

Police said that security camera footage showed the victim walking into the alleged crime scene, a parking lot in the 3400 block of Peachtree Road, without being followed or trailed by anyone.

Security camera footage also showed the victim walking down the creek adjacent to the drain pipe he said he was tossed into after he was robbed.

The victim also admitted to firefighters rescuing him that he had been drinking, the police statement says.

The victim originally told police the driver picked him up on Irby Avenue after he left Churchill’s Pub about 2:45 a.m. Sunday. The driver allegedly changed course and took the victim to the parking lot.

In the report, the victim said he was pulled from the car, beaten unconscious, and then thrown down a nine foot drain pipe. He told officers whoever beat him up stole his iPhone 6, $250 in cash, and his Wells Fargo bank card.
