Here are the top stories today in Canton-Sixes:
- A new 76-home, gated community is coming to the Sixes Road area. On Tuesday, the Board of Commissioners approved the request to rezone around 37 acres to single family residential, paving the way for the neighborhood build. Although the zoning request was approved, there were a few conditions. There was a reduction in the number of homes, from 108 to 76, there will be a right-hand deceleration lane created and a connection to Vince Merolla Drive will be made so residents can enter and exit via the traffic light at Sixes Road. - Calling all kickball players! The Canton Police Department challenges you to a game this Sunday. Thanks to the Canton PD and St. Paul AME Church, the Kickball with a Cop community event is sure to be an amazing time. The family-friendly game starts at 1:30 p.m. at Etowah River Park. Bring your friends, family and neighbors down to play, there's even going to be a hot dog lunch. The park is located at 600 Brown Industrial Parkway. (Canton PD via Facebook)
- The City of Canton is hiring a part-time receptionist/staff assistant for City Hall. The job is temporary and will include administrative and technical duties. The schedule will vary a bit but will end up around 24 hours a week. If you're interested, you can read more and apply at the link. There are also other city openings posted at the link, including those for a digital content specialist, police recruit, public works technician and utilities engineer. (City of Canton via Facebook and Canton Career Center)
- The Cherokee Area Transportation System (CATS) is exploring a plan to increase fares for the first time since 2007. The plan includes annual increases, landing on $3 per person for 0 - 5 miles and $4 for anything over 5 miles for the general public — seniors and veterans will have discounted fares, and children under 15 ride free. You are invited to provide your feedback on the proposed increases by calling 770-345-6238, going in person to CATS headquarters, located at 884 Univeter Road in Canton or emailing Greg Powell at mgpowell@cherokeega.com. There will also be a public hearing on June 6. (Cherokee County Communications Division)
