Here are the top six stories today in Canton-Sixes:
- The annual Cherokee County Mother's Day Powwow and Indian Festival is coming back to Canton this month. The May 13-14 festival will be held at Boling Park and will feature Native American dancing, a hoop dancer, Aztec dancers, tipis and an Indian village. You'll learn about primitive skills and see wildlife displays, and the event will also feature Native American vendors, a bungee jump, pony rides, train rides and more. Food vendors will be on site offering Native American food, and there will be a 5K on Saturday at 8 a.m. You'll get your tickets from the front gate when you arrive, Saturday's hours are 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Sunday's hours are 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. You can read more about the event here. (Subscription: Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
- The Board of Commissioners is holding its regular meeting tonight at 6 p.m. The agenda includes several cases, including a request to rezone over 37 acres from the current agricultural designation to residential. The plan stated is to create a 108-home gated community on the plot of land on Sixes Road and Hillhouse Lane. If you would like to be heard on this or another item on the agenda, head over to Cherokee Hall, at 1130 Bluffs Parkway in Canton. The meeting agenda is here and the official Rules of Procedure are here — you can find the specific rules and standards for public comment on page 12. (Cherokee County Calendar)
- The Holly Springs Police Department is asking the public for help in locating men captured on surveillance video during a burglary. The Hop In gas station at 2240 Holly Springs Parkway was broken into on April 25 when burglars pried open the front doors to get in. The gas station's safe was stolen during the incident, and the Holly Springs PD is asking that anyone with information call the department at 770-721-7536. The men all wore face coverings and were in a white sedan. You can see the images of the suspects and their vehicle at the link. (Atlanta News First and Holly Springs PD via Facebook)
- A number of American Red Cross blood drives will be held at Cherokee Sheriff's Office precincts around the area for the next several weeks. I will let you know as the dates arrive, but the first one is coming up on May 9 at Airport Industrial Park in Ball Ground, and the donation window is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. If you'd like to sign up for the drive in Ball Ground, you can do so here. Please enter the sponsor code "CSOAIR" when prompted, donors at this drive will receive a $10 gift card. (Cherokee Sheriff's Office via Facebook)
- There's some great news from the Cherokee County Animal Shelter — the usual adoption fee will be waived today through Friday. This deal is for every animal at the shelter, you can see the available pets here. The adopted pets come with their spay or neuter, heartworm and leukemia testing, initial vaccinations, deworming, flea preventative and microchip already done. There are quite a few cats this week, I bet you'll find the perfect match for you and your family. (Cherokee County Animal Shelter via Facebook)
- Local golfers, don't forget to sign up for South Cherokee Baseball's fundraising golf tournament on May 5 at the Fairways of Canton Golf Club. The organization has been around for more than 55 years, offering a baseball program complete with tournaments. The aim of the program is to instill in children the idea that winning isn't the most important thing. The foundation of good sportsmanship, honesty and reverence is seen as part of growth and the true point of training and competing in the program. You can find out more about the organization at the link, and you can sign up to compete, sponsor or volunteer at the golf tournament here. (South Cherokee Baseball)
