Firefighter Injured In Canton Blaze At Chemical Manufacturing Facility

Authorities and fire crews secured the area and monitored the air quality, which was deemed safe, at a Canton manufacturer.

CANTON, GA — A firefighter was injured while responding to a fire Wednesday morning at a Longview Street chemical manufacturing facility.

Fire crews responded to reports of smoke at Isotec International, according to Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services on Thursday.

When they arrived, firefighters found an "exothermic chemical reaction involving Toluene Diisocyanate and water that had ignited a fire inside a vessel on-site," the department stated.

Toluene Diisocyanate is commonly used to create coatings, elastomers, adhesives and sealants.

With the help of local and state authorities, fire officials secured the area and monitored the air quality, which was deemed safe.

The fire at Isotec was not fully extinguished until sometime Wednesday afternoon, fire officials said.

A firefighter trying to control the fire suffered minor injuries and has since been released from the hospital, fire officials said.

No civilians were injured or sickened, fire officials said. The cause of the fire was unknown.

"Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services commends the swift, coordinated efforts of all responding agencies and remains committed to protecting the safety and well-being of our community," fire officials said in a news release.

Isotech is an international producer of chemical and polymer products, according to its website.
