Here are the top five stories today in Canton-Sixes:
- Canton City Council had its first public hearings on the millage rate on Thursday, Jul. 7. The council is considering keeping the millage rate the same at 5.4 mills. This rate has been in place since 2017; however, keeping the 5.4 maintenance and operations millage rate would result in a tax increase for those whose homes are assessed at a higher value. The proposed rollback rate of 4.484 mills would keep city property tax revenues the same.(Subscription: Cherokee Tribune Ledger News)
- The audit of Cherokee County ballots in the May 24 and Jun. 21 elections is finished, and the elections board has confirmed the certified results. The board had conducted a "risk-limited" audit this Wednesday and Thursday of all early voting primary ballots from the Oak Grove precinct and Election Day ballots from Dixie, Hillside, Neese, Clayton, R.T. Jones, and Teasley precincts. The overall margin of error was 1.69 percent, well below the target mark of 10 percent. Elections Director Anne Dover said the board is "very pleased with the outcome of the audit." (Subscription: Cherokee Tribune Ledger News)
- Watermelon Day at Canton Farmers Market is happening today, Jul. 9. The event includes a watermelon eating contest and a lot of watermelon for sale. Proceeds benefit the Cherokee High School FFA. (WLJA Radio)
- Associate professor of psychology at Georgia Gwinnett College, Dr. David Ludden, said that goal-oriented vacations are not as good for de-stressing as relaxing vacations. He said, "The more relaxed vacation is better for your health. Going somewhere for a few days, sitting back, and taking in some sunshine and scenery do a world of good for your mental wellness." (Gwinnett Daily Post)
