Canton Police Arrest Public Indecency Suspect

Police tracked down the man after receiving a tip about his identity.

CANTON, GA — Canton police have arrested and charged the man accused in an incident of public indecency reported last week at Walmart.

Officers with the Canton Police Department received a tip Wednesday evening about a possible identification on the male wanted for the incident that occurred Jan. 7 at Walmart at 1550 Riverstone Parkway.

A Canton police supervisor responded to the tip and began investigating these new details. That investigation led police to identify the male as 22-year-old Demarcus Woods of Canton.

Woods was tracked down in Ball Ground and taken into custody. He was charged with one count of public indecency and booked into the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Cherokee Sheriff's Office spokesperson Jay Baker said Woods posted a $1,500 bond and was released on Thursday, Jan. 17.

Canton police spokesperson Pacer Cordry said Woods allegedly "fondled himself through his clothes." Georgia law describes public indecency when a person has sexual intercourse, exposes one's sexual organs, appears partially or completely nude or performs a "lewd caress or indecent fondling of the body of another person" in public.

"We would like to thank members of our community for taking the time to share our social media post which lead to identifying the suspect," Canton police added.
