Ex-UGA Football Player Convicted Of Murder In Gas Station Shooting

The former Georgia Bulldogs player was convicted of fatally shooting a gas station clerk during an attempted robbery.

OCONEE COUNTY, GA — A former wide receiver with the Georgia Bulldogs is expected to be sentenced Thursday after being convicted of murder in the shooting death of an Oconee County gas station clerk during a March 2021 armed robbery, authorities said.

A jury on Wednesday found Ahkil Crumpton guilty of all charges in a state trial against him in connection with the death of Elijah Wood, 23.

This comes two years after Crumpton, who was age 26 at the time, was convicted on related federal charges, including attempted robbery and making false statements in buying the gun reportedly used in the killing.

Crumpton had a Glock 9 mm pistol when he entered the Macon Highway gas station "intending to rob it," WAGA-TV reported in October 2023. During the attempted robbery, Crumpton shot and killed Wood, prosecutors said.

Authorities said Crumpton was convicted of these state charges: two counts of felony murder, attempted armed robbery, aggravated assault and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

"We are very pleased with the outcome of this trial, which reflects the tireless work, dedication and collaboration of law enforcement investigators, prosecutors and all those involved in seeking justice. While no verdict can undo the heartbreaking loss suffered, our hearts remain with Elijah’s family and loved ones, and we hope today’s decision brings a measure of justice, closure and peace as they continue to heal," authorities said.

According to his UGA profile, Crumpton is a Philadelphia native who was on the university's 2018 football roster. He also played for Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt University.
