Canton Students Get 'Schooled' In Aquarium Fish Health
Canton STEM students received an opportunity to learn about fish facts and ecosystems at the Northside Hospital Cherokee.
From Northside HospitalCanton Elementary School’s STEM Club students visited Northside Hospital Cherokee’s new facility for a special experience on March 27. Against the backdrop of the new emergency department waiting room, more than 100 saltwater fish were introduced to their new home-- an 800 gallon aquarium -- as a group of excited K-5th graders looked on.
As part of its ongoing community partnerships, Northside Hospital Cherokee partnered with Canton Elementary STEM Club to share the fish stocking of the new aquarium as an educational experience for the students. Aquarium expert from “Just Add Water”, Jody Karlin, shared facts about the fish, discussed building the tank and answered students’ questions.
“It was an opportunity that aligned so well with the things these students are currently learning about aquatic life,” said Valerie Lowery, Assistant Principal of Canton Elementary School.

STEM club students learn about ecosystems and organic lifecycles in their hydroponic lab, which was donated to the school by the Canton Rotary in 2014. Northside Hospital Cherokee recently installed a custom-made aquarium as a design fixture for the replacement hospital.
“One of the best parts about building the new Northside Hospital Cherokee is opportunities like this to connect with the community,” said Billy Hayes, CEO of Northside Hospital Cherokee.
