The school district’s virtual high school program now is in its second school year of operations and adding more academic recognition opportunities for students.
Class of 2023 graduating senior Patricia Miller this month was named the school’s winner for the STAR, or Student Teacher Achievement Recognition, Student honor. The award is bestowed upon the high school senior from each Georgia public and private high school with the highest score on any single test date of the SAT and who also ranks in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of his or her class based on grade point average.

Each honored student is invited to select his or her favorite teacher to be named the school’s STAR Teacher, and Patricia selected English teacher Hannah Mitchell.
“Congratulations to Patricia and Hannah for earning this prestigious honor and making history as i-Grad’s inaugural winners,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “We’re very proud of your achievements and the overall success of the i-Grad high school program. While i-Grad is a virtual program, Principal Andy Hall and his team have worked to include it in traditional academic honors, like the STAR program, to recognize excellence among its students and teachers. We look forward to celebrating even more accolades in the future!”
The Canton Lions Club has been the local sponsor since the statewide STAR program began in 1958. Although i-Grad was added to STAR program eligibility after the club’s annual recognition ceremony earlier this year, the club recently generously awarded Patricia its customary $500 prize bestowed upon every Cherokee County winner.
Next month, i-Grad also will have the opportunity to recognize its first-ever valedictorian and salutatorian at CCSD’s annual Scholar Recognition Banquet. As part of the program, each Scholar chooses a teacher as the most influential in his or her education and honors the educator at the banquet.
