CCSD JROTC Team Earns National Championship Win

The Air Force JROTC rifle team from Cherokee High School won the overall top honor at the All-Service National Championship competition.

A Cherokee County School District Junior ROTC team has earned a national championship win!

The Air Force JROTC rifle team from Cherokee High School won the overall top honor at the All-Service National Championship competition recently held in Ohio. As a result of the competition win, the team also was named the Air Force JROTC National Champions for the 2022-23 season.

Team members are team captain Cadet Capt. Kaylin Mayhue, a junior; Cadet Major Sydney Watson, a junior; Cadet Senior Airman Hunter Newberry, a junior; Cadet Col. Alexis Ly, a senior; and Cadet Technical Sgt. Cy Curtiss, a junior. The team is coached by JROTC teachers Senior Master Sgt. Jeffrey Bise, who serves as head coach; and Technical Sgt. Jody Van Ostrand, assistant coach.

“Congratulations to the team and their coaches on this impressive achievement,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “Our JROTC programs offer students outstanding opportunities to learn military, career and life skills, such as the dedication, teamwork and leadership involved in earning this national championship. We look forward to celebrating your success with you!”

The Cherokee County School Board and Dr. Hightower will recognize the team at a school board meeting later this spring.
