“Congratulations to Tonya on earning this very special accolade to add to her impressive record of athletic achievement,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “Tonya is a role model to many student athletes, coaches and athletic directors for her successes on the field and in her profession as a teacher, coach, administrator and athletics leader. Kudos on this honor and thank you for all you do for our students!”
Following her success as a coach and teacher, Ms. Sebring began serving as an assistant principal at Etowah High School and then as assistant principal and athletic director at Woodstock High School. She was named in 2018 to her current role overseeing all CCSD high school athletics and activities. In this role, she helped CCSD earned national renown for the successful 2020 launch of its flag football program, and she has been invited to present on the program to high school athletic leaders across the country. CCSD also has earned top honors for athletic program safety, including the 2021 National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports School award.
The first softball player at Kennesaw State University to sign a scholarship and a member of its inaugural fast-pitch team, Ms. Sebring was inducted in 2006 by her alma mater into the Kennesaw State Softball Circle of Honor. She served for eight years as the state softball chair for the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association and was inducted in 2017 into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame.
The Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame this year also will induct former Sequoyah High School football star D.J. Bleisath, who played for Tennessee Tech, the Oakland Raiders and the Arena Football League.
