CCSD Students Advance To Young Authors State Competition

CCSD students earned the top honors in six grade levels in the regional competition, including a sweep of high school grade levels.

Cherokee County School District students are advancing to the state level of the Young Georgia Authors Writing Competition!

The annual writing contest is open to students in grades kindergarten through 12 and provides an opportunity for schools to encourage writing in a variety of genres. Each CCSD school submits a top entry for each grade level to compete at the district level. District first-place winners then advance to regional competition for the opportunity to compete statewide.

The CCSD students who won first-place in the regional competition and are advancing to this spring’s state competition are:

Grade 1: Lux Coffman of Ball Ground ES STEM Academy for “Sparkles and the Two Robins”;

Grade 7: Noelle Cosgrove of Woodstock MS for “In the Absence of Flame”;

Grade 9: Lily Marie Sachse of Woodstock HS for “Zombie Park”;

Grade 10: Eva Yokley of River Ridge HS for “The One They Forgot”;

Grade 11: Baileigh Joanne Borna of River Ridge High School for “Homecoming”; and,

Grade 12: Anna Scott Wieler of Cherokee HS for “Ella Rose.”

Woodstock MS sixth-grader Joel Hulsey earned Honorable Mention for “The Brave King.”

“We’re so proud of our district and region winners for their outstanding demonstration of exemplary writing skills and creativity,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “Writing is foundational skill that is critical for student future success. Thank you to all of our teachers who guide our students in this learning and kudos to the teachers of our Young Authors winners. Congratulations and best wishes to our students in the state competition!”

Following the state competition, the Cherokee County School Board and Dr. Hightower will recognize the region and state winners at an upcoming school board meeting.
