Chase Massner: Community Invited To View Procession

The procession is expected to pass by Ollie's on Marietta Highway between 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2.

CANTON, GA -- Residents who want to pay their respects to the Cherokee County resident and Army veteran whose remains were found Aug. 1 will be able to do so Monday morning. The community is invited to line the streets and view Chase Massner's procession as it travels to the Georgia National Cemetery.

The procession is expected to arrive between 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Oct. 2, and residents can gather with American flags in front of the shopping center of Ollie's at 1750 Marietta Highway in Canton or across the highway at Taco Bell and Waffle House.

Massner was born in 1987, in Lakeland, Florida. He attended elementary school at Quint City Baptist School in Davenport, Iowa, and was baptized on Oct. 15, 1995, in Moline, Illinois. He moved to Georgia in 1997 where he continued his education and graduated from Woodstock High School in 2006.

Massner joined the U.S. Armed Forces on Jan. 30, 2008, and was released from active duty on July 23, 2011. During this time he served in Baquba, Iraq. While serving this great nation, he earned the following medals: Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Campaign Medal Iraq, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal (GWOT) and the Army Overseas Service Ribbon. While serving, his unit received Meritorious Unit Commendation, Superior Unit Award and the Presidential Unit Citation.

He was honorably discharged on Dec. 8, 2015. Massner married Amanda Chattom on Feb. 7, 2010, and they had two daughters together, Sydney Addison Massner, born June 16, 2010, and Adalynn Mae Massner, born April 26, 2013.

Massner is survived by his wife and children, who all reside in Mediapolis, Iowa; mother and stepfather, Stephanie and Javier Cadena of Woodstock; father and stepmother, Corbin and Diane Massner of Mediapolis, Iowa; siblings, Karen and JC Cunningham of Canton; Monica Cadena of Woodstock; Javier Cadena Jr. of Woodstock; and TA Morgan, Brandon Morgan and Tara Morgan, all of Georgia; grandparents, Harold and Annette Massner of Burlington, Iowa; an many aunts, uncles and cousins throughout the United States and Mexico. He was preceded in death by grandparents, William and Lorna Piper of Burlington, Iowa.

"Chase will be remembered for his silly antics that always made his loved ones laugh as well as his caring and generous demeanor," his obituary states. "He never met a stranger and was always willing to help someone in need. He was known to light up a room with his smile. Chase was a free spirit and brought Joy to everyone he crossed paths with. He was courageous and will never be forgotten."
