Here are the top five stories today in Canton-Sixes:
- A Cherokee County grand jury indicted a former deputy at the Cherokee Sheriff's Office on child molestation charges. Marquavius Brownlee, 25, is charged with two counts of aggravated child molestation, two counts of child molestation, enticing a child for indecent purposes, and violation of oath by a public officer for allegedly molesting a 14-year-old girl from Jackson County in November 2021. - Most bills the Georgia General Assembly passes each year take effect on Jul. 1, but a few will take effect on Jan. 1. Including a bill about food truck permits and inspections and several new or expanded tax credit bills. (Cherokee Tribune & Ledger News)
- On Dec. 28, two people were sentenced to prison after being accused of trafficking drugs throughout Cherokee County. Eloisa Chavez-Lopez, 40, and Erick Alexander Pauu-Sirin, 27, pleaded guilty to trafficking methamphetamine. Both were sentenced to 30 years, Chavez-Lopez will serve the first 25 years in the state penitentiary, and Pauu-Sirin will serve the first 15 years in the state penitentiary. (Canton-Sixes Patch)
- Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services posted about a fire in an apartment complex on Canterbury Ridge Parkway in Canton. Firefighters were dispatched around 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 29. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. (Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services via Facebook)
