  1. Flu season in Georgia is turning deadly. More people have died in the first two months of the 2022 flu season compared to the entirety of the 2021 season. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, 33 people have died of the flu since October. Most of the victims were 65 and over. (Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
  2. Calling all prospective pet parents: the Cherokee Humane Society has plenty of adorable, adoptable cats and dogs awaiting their forever homes. Shelters are at capacity, and eager to find foster families and permanent homes for these animals. You can browse the shelter's residents and filter by breed, age, gender, and size.   3. On Dec. 24, the Canton Police Department held its annual Awards Banquet. Several departmental employees were recognized for their outstanding performance and admirable devotion to the community. The Supervisor of the Year awards went to Sergeant Jesse Hamilton and Sergeant Adam Yurkovsky. The Chief's Award was given to Gabriela Gonzalez. You can view the whole list of winners at the link.   4. Last week, the nearby Rose Creek Library held a very special Hanukkah celebration for some of its youngest patrons. Families and their children got to enjoy learning about Hanukkah through a delightful storytime. There were also crafts and games centered around the holiday.   5. Action Church in Canton will be opening its doors to the homeless this weekend. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, the church will operate as a warming station.
