  1. Canton's own Liberty Elementary has been recertified as a State School of Character — a distinction enjoyed by only one other school in Georgia, and 71 others across the nation. State and National Schools of Character are those that model positive core values, as designated by educational nonprofit Character.org. Liberty Elementary previously earned the prestigious title in 2017 and 2018. (Cherokee Tribune Ledger News)
  2. Cherokee Recreation and Parks' Guns & Hoses 5K Run/Walk is one week away! The event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Hobgood Park, kicking off at 8 a.m. Proceeds from the 5K will raise funds for charity causes selected by both the "Guns" (Cherokee County Sheriff's Office) and the "Hoses" (Cherokee County Fire Department). While early registration has ended, you can still register online or sign up day-of. (Cherokee County, Georgia via Facebook)
  3. The Cherokee Marshal's Office is hosting a raffle fundraiser to "take a bite out of breast cancer." For a $10 donation (cash or Venmo), you'll get a raffle ticket to win a 65" Roku TV; all proceeds will benefit a Cherokee County employee with a breast cancer diagnosis. The drawing will be held on Friday, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. via Facebook Live. (Cherokee County Animal Shelter via Facebook)
  4. On Thursday, the Rotary Club of Canton honored two community leaders for their professional excellence. Cherokee County School Board member Dr. Susan Padgett-Harrison received the Robert S. (Bob) Stubbs II Guardian of Ethics Award, and Cherokee County Acting District Attorney Susan Treadaway received the W. Lee Arrendale Vocational Excellence Award. Both Padgett-Harrison and Treadaway are now under consideration for regional awards, to be presented by Rotary District 6910 in Gainesville, Georgia. (Canton-Sixes Patch)
  5. Cherokee County School District has named its 2023 STAR Students and Teachers. The STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) program awards high school seniors from each Georgia public and private high school who receive the highest single-day SAT score while also ranking in the top 10 (or top 10 percent) students in their class. Each student is then asked to select their favorite teacher, who will then be named that school's STAR teacher. A full list of school honorees is available at the link. (Canton-Sixes Patch)
