Here are the top five stories in Canton-Sixes today:

  1. This week, Hill Street Circle behind Canton City Hall will be closed to all traffic due to road paving. Academy Street will also be closed to northbound traffic from Hill Street Circle to Archer Street. Call 770-704-1500 for ADA assistance upon arrival at City Hall during this closure. (Canton GA Gov)
  2. According to AAA, Georgia's average gas price fell below $4.00 on Jul. 25. In Cherokee County, the price of gas dropped to $3.90 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline. The state average is 14 cents less than a week ago and 52 cents less than last month. (Cherokee Tribune Ledger News)
  3. After almost four years of renovations, Shoal Creek Baptist Church is expected to reopen its sanctuary to the public in the fall. The historic church, located at 4967 Fincher Road in Canton, opened in 1839 and is almost 200 years old. The church will have the same look and feel that visitors have grown accustomed to over the years, with various renovations to improve the foundation of the church. (Cherokee Tribune Ledger News)
  4. The USDA's pandemic relief program that provided all students with free meals has ended. Now, meals are returning to 2019-2020 school year prices. Cherokee County School District families can apply to see if they qualify for free or reduced-price meals. (CCSD)
  5. The Cherokee County School District's Indian Knoll Elementary School earned its first national character education award for its "Core Values Cultivate a Culture of Caring" initiative, where students completed various service learning projects. Character.org, a national nonprofit organization that promotes developing positive character among students, honored Indian Knoll ES with the Promising Practices Award. (CCSD)
