Here are the top four stories in Canton-Sixes today:

  1. It's time for the Up River Fest! The 5K will start at 4 p.m. today, and will benefit Goshen Valley. Live music will be going on from 5 - 10 p.m., and there will be a host of vendors, food, drinks, a kids area and more. Local musicians will be performing all evening, including Kurt Wheeler featuring Haddy Nix, Chad Patterson, Ansley Fain, Cody Bolden and Bent to Fly. The fun is at The Mill on Etowah, 225 Reformation Parkway. (Canton City Calendar)
  2. Former Canton mayor and city council member Walton Davis Jr. has passed away at the age of 92. Described by family as determined, resilient and spiritual, Davis leaves behind a political legacy of progress. As a mayor, Davis privatized garbage service in town and appointed the first Black city council member, John Heard. Walton Davis Jr. served for more than 40 years on the Hospital Authority Board for R.T. Jones Memorial Hospital, now Northside Hospital Cherokee, and was involved with the Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees and the Kiwanis Club. (Subscription: Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
  3. The Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services (CCFES) Honor Guard sent five of their own to the National Fire Academy in Maryland last week for the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. The ceremony this year recognized 144 firefighters that died in the line of duty and saw thousands of attendees. Representing CCFES at the event were Battalion Chief Ricky Collett, Battalion Chief Cheri Collett, Lieutenant Angela Rice, Fire Apparatus Operator Stuart Fleming and Sergeant Chris Brauda.   4. Cherokee County Senior Services is holding a paper towel drive until May 31 to help seniors in need right here in Cherokee County. The center is asking for donations of unused paper towels in the original packaging, you can bring it over during normal business hours. The Senior Center is located at 1001 Univeter Road in Canton, and their hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Cherokee County via Facebook)

  • History Factory, A Day on the Trail with Eva Gumbert and Katy Ross: The History Cherokee walk will bring you down a private trail along the Etowah River as you learn about the native plants in the area and how they've been used. You'll even get a plant to bring home with you. The trail is about a mile long, and it is considered moderately difficult terrain. (10 a.m. - noon)
  • Merry Market Craft Fair & Bazaar: A special Mother's Day shopping trip may be in order, head to the craft fair for vendors, food, music and more, in the lower parking lot at 930 Lower Scott Mill Road. (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)
  • Cherokee County Mother's Day Powwow and Indian Festival: The festival will at Boling Park and will feature Native American dancing, a hoop dancer, Aztec dancers, tipis and so much more. Food vendors will be offering Native American food, and there will be a 5K this morning at 8 a.m. You'll get your tickets from the front gate when you arrive. (10 a.m. - 7 p.m.)
  • LEGO Lab: For all ages and skill levels, create and build with LEGOs. Children must be accompanied by an adult for the fun today at the Rose Creek Library, 4476 Towne Lake Parkway in Woodstock. (3 - 4 p.m.)
  • Jake Hughes: The musician will be performing tonight at Stout's Growlers, 188 North Street. (6 - 9 p.m.)
  • Kurt Wheeler: Enjoy the live music at Riverstone Corner Bistro, 151 Reinhardt College Parkway. (7 - 9 p.m.)
  • Laurie Jazzwine: The artist will be on stage tonight at J. Michael's Prime, 110 Mountain Vista Boulevard. (7 - 9 p.m.)

Tomorrow

  • Cherokee County Mother's Day Powwow and Indian Festival: The festival will at Boling Park and will feature Native American dancing, a hoop dancer, Aztec dancers, tipis and so much more. Food vendors will be offering Native American food, and you'll get your tickets from the front gate when you arrive. (11 a.m. - 6 p.m.)
  • Braves Game on The Big Screen: Watch the game with your favorite neighbors, family and friends at The Mill on Etowah, 225 Reformation Parkway. (1:37 - 3:30 p.m.)
  • Bike Night: join your friends, neighbors and family every Sunday for a family-friendly Bike Night at Canton Icehouse. Children eat free, and there will be live music with Middle Raged. Head over with your bike, Canton Icehouse is located at 150 Keith Drive. (4 - 7 p.m.)

  • The Cherokee County Animal Shelter is holding its regular Saturday adoption event today. The available animals can be seen online here. Adoption hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and the shelter is located at 1015 Univeter Road. (Cherokee County Animal Shelter via Facebook)
  • Cherokee Recreation & Parks is holding a Public Input Meeting on Thursday, May 18, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. to collect feedback for the upcoming Hickory Flat area park. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting at the Hickory Flat Gym, the address is 4835 Hickory Road. (Cherokee Recreation & Parks)
  • Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services: "Longtime fire department Public Information Officer, Tim Cavender, retires from CCFES after nearly 20 years of service.
