Here are the top stories today in Canton-Sixes:

  1. The Canton Police Department is hiring! They're looking for trainees, certified officers and certified officers with bachelor's degrees and offering healthy salaries with a 14-day-per-month schedule. For every two full years of prior certified experience, your starting salary will be increased by $1,000, and the positions come with annual longevity pay, health care and benefits and a take-home patrol car within 40 miles. You can even have visible tattoos these days. If you'd like to apply or find out more, please reach out to Chris Cochran at 770-720-4883 or Chris.Cochran@cantonga.gov. (Canton PD via Facebook)
  2. The second annual Eagle Bearer Cornhole Tournament is this Saturday from 1-5 p.m. at Reformation Brewery. Money raised through the tournament will support the son of Justin and Amber Hicks, the couple was murdered in 2021 in their home. Justin was a firefighter with Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services (CCFES) and Amber was an audiologist tech. Justin had just finished training to be a paramedic. Members of the fire department created Jacob's Pathway Foundation to help support their child, Jacob, who was found in the home unharmed. You can support the cause by donating here and/or by attending the tournament this Saturday. (CCFES via Facebook)
  3. Today is Wear Your Lifejacket to Work day, and Safe Kids Cherokee County and Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services (CCFES) are asking us to take pictures of us celebrating the day. The National Safe Boating Council's "WEAR IT" campaign spreads the message to wear your lifejacket to be safe out on the water. You can upload your pictures on the Safe Kids or CCFES Facebook pages. The two organizations have created Life Jacket Loaner Stations around Lake Allatoona, Rope Mill Park and Etowah River Park and they also provide lifejackets we can borrow while boating, swimming, kayaking or paddle boarding. Be safe, everyone, and put those lifejackets on. (CCFES via Facebook)
  4. Those that think their pets belong on film can get a foot in the door this weekend in Cherokee County. Animal Casting Atlanta is holding an open call this Sunday in Ball Ground, and you can bring the pets over from 1-3 p.m. to see if they have what it takes. The open call will be held at 1690 Julius Bridge Road in Ball Ground, at the casting company's farm. They have had many successes through their own farm animals, who have been in commercials, shows and movies and client's pets that board at their facility Dog Works. You can learn more about the organization and opportunities here. (Atlanta News First)
