📰 News we're reading

• God's Acre: Former Native American boarding school reveals complex history (ajc.com) — A 19th-century Cherokee-led boarding school once operated just north of the Etowah River near present-day Cartersville, and historians are piecing together its little-known story. High Tower Mission School, active from 1823 to 1834, educated a small group of Cherokee children and briefly employed Elias Boudinot, who later edited the Cherokee Phoenix and signed the treaty that led to the Trail of Tears.

• Edward LaCounte Sallette (hhjonline.com) — Cartersville readers may recognize the Sallette family, as Edward LaCounte Sallette’s son Mark and his family live here. Edward, an 89-year-old retired engineer and devoted church member, passed away December 5. His memorial service will be held Saturday, December 13, at Crossroads Baptist Church in Eatonton, with visitation beginning at noon.
