• Second Michigan football recruit decommits after Sherrone Moore firing (usatoday.com) — Cartersville offensive lineman Bear McWhorter, a standout from Cass High School, has decommitted from the University of Michigan after the firing of head coach Sherrone Moore. McWhorter, a three-star prospect, announced on social media that he’s reopening his recruitment, a move that could reshape his college options and draw new attention to local high school talent.

• Amid big sporting events, Georgia tourism marketing efforts need boosting, some say (wsbtv.com) — Cartersville’s own state Rep. Matt Gambill is among lawmakers questioning whether Georgia’s $11 million tourism marketing budget is enough, especially with major events like the Cricket Celebration Bowl drawing national TV audiences. At a Jekyll Island meeting, tourism and business leaders argued the state is missing chances to promote Georgia while other states buy ads during big games.

• Edward LaCounte Sallette (hhjonline.com) — A branch of the Sallette family in Cartersville is mourning Edward LaCounte Sallette, 89, who passed away December 5. The longtime engineer, church volunteer, and devoted family man retired to Lake Sinclair, where he was active in local Baptist congregations. His memorial service will be held this afternoon in Eatonton, with visitation an hour prior.
