30 Year-Old West End Resident, Camease Miller, Killed in East Atlanta Home Invasion

(The following was written by Peralte Paul for East Atlanta Patch.  Cascade Patch recently learned that the victim in this case was a resident of the West End area and that she is survived by 2 young sons.)

EAST ATLANTA — A city employee was shot and killed Tuesday night in the 1600 block of Van Vleck Avenue SE.

The victim, Camease Miller, who worked for the public works department, was visiting at the home at the time of the 11:45 p.m. incident.

"Based on witness statements it appears the victim was shot during a home invasion," Atlanta Police Department spokeswoman Kim Jones told East Atlanta Patch.

Miller was was found in a closet of the home, which also had a recording studio.

Homicide investigators continue to investigate but it doesn't appear this was a random incident.

"This was not some random crime, there was not any evidence of a burglary or robbery," Ed Gilgor, chairman of Neighborhood Planning Unit-W, told Patch.

"Homicide has it and they have what would appear to be very good leads."

Miller's shooting death is the third homicide in as many months.

On May 25, Patrick Cotrona, a May Avenue homeowner, was shot and killed on his street as he and two friends walked to the Village. 

On May 18, Henry Omar Reeves, 27 was shot dead in the 1200 block of Metropolitan Avenue SE. in East Atlanta.

Cotrona and one of his friends were shot during a robbery.

Investigators think the Reeves shooting, however, was not a random crime and that he and his killer had some issue that led to it.

Even so, none of the killers have been caught and they come amidst a serious crime wave that's terrorized a number of Southeast Atlanta communities not seen since the Jack Boys' crime spree of 2010.

In that wave, which lasted from Oct. 19, 2010 through Nov. 27, 2010, residents in residents in Grant Park, Ormewood Park, Lakewood Heights, Old Fourth Ward, Benteen Park and Virginia-Highland  suffered 17 armed robberies, six carjackings, a murder and a rape.
