Mass Outages Hit Metro Atlanta After Severe Storms

BREAKING: Thunderstorms, hail, high wind gusts slam metro Atlanta, causing damage and power outages for thousands.

DEKALB COUNTY, GA -- Cobb County authorities are warning early-morning commuters Wednesday to be wary of downed power lines and trees after severe thunderstorms rolled through the area the night before.
Thousands remained without power and one person was killed after a tree crashed down on his home in Jackson County, according to news reports.
Early Wednesday, Georgia Power said that out of 174,000 outages about 30,000 remained without power and that utility crews from other parts of the state were being mobilized to help. Most of the outages were North Georgia but included many areas of metro Atlanta.

Service restored to more than 135k overnight, additional crews moving in from other parts of state. Thank you for your continued patience. β€” Georgia Power (@GeorgiaPower) March 22, 2017

Public school districts in Dalton, Dawson, Lumpkin and Whitfield announced that they would start classes two hours later because of the storms.

DeKalb County had scattered damage as images on local TV showed trees down in some areas and cosmetic impact to some structures.
