Year-Round Students at Hutchinson Elementary are Back in Class this Week
Year-round students head back to school!
The summer has come and gone for 3 local schools who are part of the new year-round school concept, who started classes this past Monday, July 15th.
Boyd, Centennial Place and Hutchinson elementary school students all headed back to class at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 15 as Atlanta Public Schools kicked off βDay One APSβ for year-round schools.
According to TalkUp APS, the APS Blog, "the year-round school concept began several years ago as an alternative to the traditional school calendar. The goal was to provide some flexibility in scheduling and another way β along with summer school and enrichment programs β for students to retain more of what they learned throughout the school year.Β Centennial Place and Boyd elementary schools were the first APS schools to adopt the year-round schedule during the 1999-2000 school year.Β Β Hutchinson Elementary was added in 2004. The summer break, or intersession, began June 3 for year-round students."
One important thing to note is that year-round school is in session the same amount of days as the regular school year. Β That is a common misconception, that year-round is in school more days...But the fact is that both are in session for 180 days. Β Year-round is just broken up into quarters. Β Many parents say that year-round students are able to retain a lot more information because they do not have the long summer break.
In addition,Β Boyd and Hutchinson elementary are two of the districtβs new 58 Community Eligibility Option (CEO) schools.Β As part of this pilot program, all students enrolled at CEO schools will receive free breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack.
NOTE:Β Students who did not register for school by June 28 and are eligible for APS transportation will need to locate the nearest bus stop until bus routes for year-round schools are updated on July 26.Β For more information about transportation changes, visitΒ http://atlantapublicschools.us/transportation.

The first day of school for traditional APS schools will resume on Wednesday, August 7.
