Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:

  1. The 35th annual Shore Sweep event is scheduled for Sep. 23 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., continuing a tradition of community efforts to keep Lake Lanier clean. Over the past 34 years, this event has successfully removed a staggering 2.16 million pounds of trash from the lake. In the previous year, 90 tons of debris were collected with the help of over 1,400 volunteers, emphasizing the vital role this event plays in maintaining the cleanliness of Lake Lanier for the entire community to enjoy.   2. A half-mile segment of the Big Creek Greenway in Forsyth County, situated north of the Bethelview Trailhead (mile marker 9.0-9.5), will be temporarily closed for approximately two months due to essential boardwalk repairs, subject to weather conditions. However, the Bethelview Trailhead and the remaining portions of the Big Creek Greenway will remain accessible during this period.   3. Former professional athlete Brian Jordan is on a mission to promote a love of reading among elementary students in Forsyth County. Jordan, known for his career in both football and baseball, recently visited nearby Sawnee Elementary School, where he engaged with enthusiastic students who expressed their passion for sports and reading, all with big smiles on their faces.   4. A fatal motorcycle crash occurred in Forsyth County on Thursday night at the intersection of Waldrip Road and SR 369, resulting in the death of the motorcycle rider, 53-year-old Timothy Cantrell from Cleveland. The accident happened when the driver of a Hyundai Sonata, 35-year-old Colt Spencer from Gainesville, failed to yield to the motorcycle while making a left turn, leading to a collision. Colt Spencer has been arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle, DUI, and failure to yield while turning left in connection with the incident. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
  5. Tree removal work is scheduled to continue along Old Atlanta Road in Forsyth County, from Olde Atlanta Parkway to St. Marlo Country Club Parkway today, Sep. 9. This may result in intermittent lane closures and the presence of flaggers from around 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, anticipate potential delays, and be alert for trucks entering and exiting the roadway in this area.
