Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:
- Cross Atlanta Church, led by Pastor Josh Mayo, has undertaken a unique mission to make a significant impact on their local community by relieving medical debt for over 2,400 individuals in Fulton and Forsyth counties. Through a third party, they donated $15,000 and negotiated over $2.5 million in debt relief, benefiting families with medical expenses, often a heavy burden. The church emphasizes the importance of loving neighbors and helping others, with plans to commemorate this debt-relief effort and model their actions on the idea of debt forgiveness, akin to the teachings of Jesus. - The Forsyth County News team is inviting the community to join them for a casual gathering at Tin Cup Grill in Cumming on Sep. 20. Attendees are encouraged to bring questions, suggestions, and news tips for the team. The event will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., and while registration is available, it is not required to attend. - A 66-year-old Cumming man was arrested by Forsyth County deputies on Aug. 9, following allegations of stealing money from a person seeking housing in Florida. The case originated from a report made to the Jupiter Police Department in Florida in 2021, where the victim had responded to a Facebook advertisement for a rental house. After agreeing to rent a different property, the victim paid the suspect $1,500 as rent and another $1,500 as a deposit via Zelle. When the victim discovered that the security codes provided by Mathew didn't work, and Mathew had ceased communication, Jupiter police traced the Zelle account to the Forsyth County suspect, leading to his arrest on charges of felony theft by taking and fraud. - A section of Settingdown Circle, close to the Settingdown Road intersection in Forsyth County, is temporarily closed due to a sinkhole, and repair work is underway. The closure is expected to last approximately one week, depending on weather conditions. Drivers are advised to take alternative routes and adhere to posted signage in the area to ensure their safety. (Forsyth County Georgia Government via Facebook)
- Altrusa International of North Georgia, Inc. is hosting a Halloween-themed fashion show on Oct. 30 at the Forsyth Conference Center in Cumming. Attendees can expect a fun and spooky atmosphere. Proceeds from the event will support various causes and organizations associated with Altrusa. For more information and details, you can contact 770-366-6605 or 310-343-3265.
