Here are the top five stories in Cumming today:
- At the regular September meeting of the Mayor and City Council in Cumming, several new police officers were sworn into duty, bringing the Cumming Police Department to full staff with a total of 22 officers. The officers sworn in during the ceremony are Michael Bernieri, Raed ElMansy, and Julian Lee-Foon. This addition to the police force reflects the commitment to maintaining public safety in Cumming. - Forsyth County officials have reported a sewage spill of 1,200 gallons in the Pinnacle Glen subdivision near 3072 Cross Creek Drive on Aug. 31. The spill occurred due to a buildup of grease and rags in the gravity sewer line, leading to sewage entering Bagley Creek. The affected area has been cleaned and treated with lime, and the county is following Environmental Protection Division guidelines and conducting stream monitoring for one year as a precaution. - The Cumming Country Fair and Festival is approaching, featuring a concert series with Neal McCoy, Mark Wills, and Randy Houser. The concerts, included with fair admission, will start at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are currently available for $7 until Oct. 4, when they will then increase to $10. - The Georgia Youth Sustainability Conference is scheduled to take place in nearby Snellville on Nov. 4, organized by Green Cell in collaboration with the United Nations' Atlanta Chapter and the Georgia Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council. This event is designed for youth interested in sustainability advocacy and will offer dynamic workshops, interactive discussions, and keynote speakers to equip attendees with the knowledge and tools to drive positive change in their communities. The conference welcomes middle and high school students, teachers, eco-club sponsors, and change-makers, with scholarships available for students from Title 1 schools. (Appen Media)
- The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners is currently accepting sealed bids until 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 20, for two pieces of property. The first property, located at 785 Old Alpharetta Road, covers 1.25 acres and is currently zoned as a Restricted Industrial District (M1). The second property, at 7305 Lanier Drive, spans 2.801 acres and is currently zoned as Agricultural (A1) District. (Forsyth County, GA)
