Here are the top five stories today in Cumming:

  1. A local car dealership in Forsyth County continued its annual tradition of honoring the victims of the 9/11 attacks by providing meals for the first responders in the community. This gesture serves as a tribute to those who put their lives on the line daily to protect and serve the country. The dealership's commitment to recognizing and supporting these local heroes is a part of their ongoing tradition. (Subscription: Forsyth County News)
  2. Contractors began demolishing a section of Jerri Hanners' property, which holds 46 years of memories for her, to make way for a multi-lane divided highway approved by Forsyth County board members. Hanners, along with her husband Bobby, knew about the condemnation of sections of their property but were surprised by the timing of the demolition. They are also awaiting a payout of over $25,000 from the county for their land and are seeking information on where to obtain the funds. Eminent domain land deals like these are not uncommon, and homeowners will need to file a motion with the courts to access the settlement amount based on the land's appraisal. (WSB-TV)
  3. Forsyth County Solicitor-General Bill Finch was acknowledged at the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners meeting on Sep. 7 for receiving the Solicitor-General of the Year award from the Georgia Association of Solicitor-Generals. This recognition was granted to Finch in recognition of his dedication, integrity, and strong ethical standards. The award was conferred on him during the summer. 4. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners acknowledged Avery Gravitt for his tenure as Fleet Services director upon his retirement announcement. Gravitt, who assumed the role in 2007, oversaw the maintenance and servicing of the county's vehicles and equipment during his tenure. The Board expressed gratitude for his dedicated service, leadership, and performance, wishing him well in his future endeavors. (Forsyth County Georgia Government via Facebook)
  5. In case you missed it, the Cumming Public Schoolhouse recently celebrated its 100th anniversary with a gathering of alumni and community members. Hosted by the Historical Society of Cumming/Forsyth County, the event welcomed people from across Forsyth County to commemorate the school's rich history. (Subscription: Forsyth County News)
