Help for Seniors with Vision Loss at Gwinnett's Generations Expo

Assistive Technology is helping seniors with vision loss live more independently.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (June 13th, 2023) Seniors will have the opportunity to try out the latest in assistive technology for the blind and visually impaired at this Saturday’s Generations Expo at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. Seniors are by far the largest age group affected by blindness and visual impairment.

A 2015 study by the NIH found that of the 3.2 million Americans who have a visual impairment or are blind, 2.9 million, or 90% are over the age of 60. With just over 260,000 Georgians experiencing a form of visual impairment, it is estimated that it affects roughly 240,000 Georgians over 60 (3). The CDC estimates that cases of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness for seniors, will double by 2050.

β€œThe numbers are staggering,” reports Low Vision Supply spokesman Phillip Zingleman; β€œwe see seniors in our community every day who aren’t able to live independently or enjoy their favorite activities due to vision loss.” Phillip, who is legally blind himself, continued, sating that β€œSeniors need to know that community resources and tools to help them see better and live more independently are available,”
