Man Killed in Wreck on Highway 20

Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that happened Thursday morning on Highway 20 in front of the  in South Forsyth County.

The victim, 52-year-old Carey James Abee, of 42 Vickie Drive in Dawsonville, was traveling eastbound on Highway 20 on his 2011 Taizhou Meiduo Scooter when his vehicle was struck.

According to Capt. Tim House with the , Stephen John Simone, 44, of 2200 Skylar Leigh Drive in Buford was traveling westbound on Highway 20 in a 2006 Isuzu box truck. As he was making a left turn onto Windermere Parkway, Simone failed to yield the right of way to Abee causing the accident. 

Simone’s truck drove over the scooter, hit the Windermere sign causing the truck to turn over on its right side pinning Abee under it.

Several people who were at the scene of the wreck were able to lift the truck and remove Abee who was taken to Northside Hospital-Forsyth where he later died.

It doesn't appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident, House said.

"I think it was just simply a case where Simone just didn't yield right of way," said House. "He [Simone] should have stopped and waited for the scooter to come through the intersection and for whatever reason he decided to make the left turn at the same time the scooter was coming."

House did add that citizens need to be vigilant of motorcycles and scooters that are on the roadways of Forsyth County.

"If you think you have time–maybe you don't have time to make that turn," he said. "You should wait and just let that vehicle go through the intersection and then try and make a safe turn."

The crash is still under investigation and charges are pending.
