- Students from the nearby University of North Georgia's (UNG) College of Education are collaborating with local libraries to promote a love for reading and literacy among children. As part of a project led by Dr. Danielle Sachdeva, associate professor of literacy and elementary education, the students will conduct story times for preschool children at two public libraries during the fall semester. This initiative, funded through a grant, encourages UNG students to engage with children through literature and reading, strengthening community ties in the process. (University of North Georgia)
- The Forsyth County government has declared Sep. 15 through Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The theme for this year's celebration is "Prosperity, Power, and Progress," acknowledging the notable achievements of the Hispanic community in the economic and political sectors. - The Forsyth County Education Foundation awarded over $109,000 in grants to 26 county schools and programs. These funds will support various initiatives, including wellness programs, science labs, and virtual reality classrooms. - A 28-year-old Cumming woman was arrested by Forsyth County deputies on Aug. 24 for battery charges after allegedly throwing her vape at her grandmother during an argument. Deputies responded to a home on Burruss Road, where the suspect claimed her grandmother was intrusive and grew angry when she refused to answer her questions. The suspect stated she threw her vape because she felt "spiritually connected" to her sister in West Virginia, whom she believed her grandmother was somehow hurting, although she didn't know how. The suspect faces felony battery charges and is held on an $11,130 bond at the Forsyth County Jail. (Appen Media)
