Both Drivers Die In Auburn Head-On Collision Over Weekend

Two men from Auburn — both in their 20s, one an off-duty police officer — died Saturday in Barrow County when their cars collided head on.

GEORGIA — Two Auburn, Georgia, men died over the weekend when the cars they were driving collided head-on in Barrow County.

Investigators determined that Jacob Peek, 25, an officer with the Auburn Police Department who was off duty at the time, lost control of his Ford Mustang on Carl-Midway Road shortly after midnight on July 17, according to multiple news reports.

The car crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Toyota Corolla head-on, driven by Zachary Smith, 28. Georgia state troopers found both Peek and Smith dead at the scene.

Officials said that three other people in the Mustang and one other person in the Corolla were seriously injured and taken to Northside Gwinnett Hospital, according to Atlanta news station WAGA-TV. The passengers were not identified.

Investigators say they don’t know why Peek lost control of his car and will continue to investigate.

Peek previously had been a police officer in Winder, where a memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Smith Funeral Home, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Smith’s funeral is set for 2 p.m. Friday at Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford.
