Dacula High Student Dies After Attempting to 'Harm Herself' (Updated)

School principal: "We will have additional counselors on hand [Thursday] to lend support to our students and teachers."

A Dacula High School student, “who attempted to harm herself at school,” has died, the principal said in a letter to parents Wednesday.

The letter from Principal Dr. Bryan K. Long was posted on the school’s website.

I need to alert you to a situation that occurred at our school today. We had a student who attempted to harm herself at school. Emergency personnel responded providing assistance to the student; however, we have received word that the student did not survive. While no other students were involved, many students knew that “something” was going on as the gym was cordoned off as police and first responders were at our school. I wanted to communicate with you directly on this to avoid rumors and speculation.

As an educator and a parent this type of situation is very difficult. If your student has concerns about what occurred today and wishes to speak with someone, please encourage them to contact our school counselors. We will have additional counselors on hand tomorrow to lend support to our students and teachers. Our counselors are available to help students with a variety of issues and concerns and can help them deal with some of the challenges that touch their lives.

Sincerely,

Dr. Bryan K. Long,

Principal

How the student harmed herself was not mentioned. She was alone in the gymnasium when the incident happened.

Counselors are expected at the school Thursday, and a moment of silence and prayer was scheduled for Thursday morning, the Gwinnett Daily Post reported.

WSB-TV reported Thursday afternoon that the girl fell from the second story in the gym.

All after-school activites were cancelled Wednesday, the school said on Facebook.
