Gray, who also illustrates her books, was born in Los Angeles and lived there for most of her life until moving to Chicago, Illinois to be near family. She and her spouse relocated to Dallas in spring 2021 after spending a winter in Chicago.

"My spouse and I moved from Los Angeles to be near family but quickly realized we would rather live in a warmer climate. That frigid winter is what paved the way to 'Sonny the Snowflake,'" Gray told Patch.
