Here are the top three stories today in Dalton:
- Dalton-based Shaw Industries has announced the 164 recipients of its 2023 Associate Dependent Scholarship -a new record. Since Shaw Industries introduced its scholarship program in 2019, more than 400 scholarships have been awarded to high school student dependents of Shaw associates. A full list of the 2023 Associate Dependent Scholarship recipients is available at the link. (Floor Focus)
- A 52-year-old Dalton man - James Allan Crawford - has been arrested and charged for a 2022 animal cruelty case. Over a dozen dogs were found locked in Crawford's home with no air conditioning, along with excrement-covered floors, and an animal carcass on the lawn. Police Department personnel responding to complaints about the dogs in July 2022 found a number of chihuahuas locked inside Crawford's home, which was allegedly so filthy, deputies were moved to vomit. Crawford was not home at the time, but a warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was apprehended at the Murray County Detention Center, returned to Whitfield County, and is now pending trial at the Whitfield County Detention Center. (The Georgia Gazette)
- City Council member Annalee Harlan Sams has announced that she will be running for Dalton mayor in the upcoming Nov. 7 election. The announcement has come on the heels of Mayor David Pennington's statement that he will not seek reelection. Sams said that Dalton's priorities include investment in infrastructure projects such as stormwater management, sidewalk and street improvements, and updates to recreation facilities. Sams is a fourth-generation Daltonian who served the community as a paramedic for 12 years before joining the City Council in 2018. (Dalton Daily Citizen)
