DEKALB COUNTY, GA — More than 2,500 people got vaccinated against COVID-19 over the weekend in DeKalb County, and each of them got $100 for doing it.

In partnership with the county Board of Health and MedCura Health, DeKalb County administered 2,526 COVID-19 vaccinations at its event Saturday at Stonecrest Mall — and gave out $100 prepaid debit cards to each participant, according to a Saturday news release.

This is the third mass vaccination event the county's held in the last month, offering $50 at the first event. Just two weeks ago, DeKalb County personnel administered COVID-19 vaccines to over 1,100 people.

"This has been an amazing day for DeKalb County and the region," DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said in the release. "We also served a very diverse group of people from surrounding counties, including Henry, Newton and Gwinnett. That's a good thing because COVID-19 is no respecter of county lines or city limits. We saved lives today."

The vaccination event — which was supposed to end at 1 p.m., but was extended to 6 p.m. — featured appearances from NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo, trumpeter extraordinaire Milkshake Mayfield, gospel singer Dottie Peoples and award-winning gospel radio host Larry Tinsley.
