7th Inmate Dies At DeKalb Jail, Authorities Say

The inmate's death came nearly three weeks after another inmate died at the DeKalb County Jail.

DECATUR, GA — Another inmate has died while at the DeKalb County Jail, authorities said.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday said the death of Larynz Redd, 27, of Decatur, is the seventh in-custody death at the jail this year.

Redd was found unresponsive in his cell on Saturday morning, authorities said. Emergency medical workers rendered aid, but authorities said Redd was pronounced dead of an unknown cause.

He was arrested in May 2024, authorities said. DeKalb County Jail records on Tuesday showed Redd was arrested on charges of criminal attempt-armed robbery, theft by taking and failure to appear for fingerprintable charge.

There were no signs of foul play in connection with his death, authorities said, adding Redd's cause of death is under investigation.

Redd's death comes after Preston Bush died on Sept. 4 after suffering a medical emergency at the jail. Bush was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“The DeKalb Sheriff’s Office is deeply concerned about the death of any individual in our
custody,” DeKalb County Sheriff Melody M. Maddox said in a news release. “Their care and safety are our priorities, but no occurrence of this nature is predictable. The circumstances, regardless of what caused a death, are always thoroughly investigated. In addition, our jail operations team is committed to improving conditions at the jail that may help to prevent incidents where possible.”
