Back To School In DeKalb Co.: Here's What To Know

DEKALB COUNTY, GA — The first day of school is nearing for Georgia students, and as parents prepare, Patch has your back-to-school guide to usher you through the process.

So as you stuff your student's backpack with supplies, or search for those handy back-to-school deals, check out what you need to know ahead of the 2024-25 academic year in DeKalb County. (See back-to-school deals below.)

DeKalb County School District

School begins in DeKalb on Aug. 5 and is set to end on May 29, 2025 for students. Two independent learning days are scheduled for Nov. 5 and March 7, 2025.

High-school students can attend open house on July 31, while students who attend elementary and middle schools can visit their open houses on Aug. 1.

School Menus

Some students in DeKalb may receive free meals due to the county's participation in the Community Eligibility Provision nutrition program. School officials said Friday the program is being offered at 105 county schools.

“We are excited to expand the number of DeKalb County School District CEP programs from 75 to 105,” Dr. Connie Walker, executive director of DCSD School Nutrition Services, said in a news release. “Programs that support our students and community are essential to academic success. School Nutrition Services will do everything within our capacity to help students be as ready to learn as possible.”

Menu prices vary in DeKalb. Reduced meals for all schools cost $0.30 for breakfast and $0.40 for lunch.

Back-to-School Event

DeKalb County Schools will host a back-to-school rally from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the district's administrative and instructional complex, 1701 Mountain Industrial Blvd. in Stone Mountain.

The rally's theme will be "Disrupting for Excellence: New Levels, New Heights."

Live entertainment, a kids fun zone, family resources, health screenings, testing and vaccinations will be available, according to school officials. School supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Decatur City Schools

Students in Decatur return to school on July 30, with the final day of school being May 23, 2025. A single digital learning day will be held on Nov. 5.

Menu prices vary in Decatur. Reduced meals for all schools cost $0.30 for breakfast and $0.40 for lunch. Extra milk is priced at $0.50.

Back-to-School Event

The Center Helping Obesity In Children End Successfully is sponsoring the 14th Annual Let's Move! DeKalb back-to-school gathering and food pantry from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Exchange Park Recreation Center, 2771 Columbia Drive in Decatur.

Organizers said the event is being sponsored in partnership with Commissioner Larry Johnson and Victory for the World Church.

Backpacks with school supplies will be provided only to students in attendance, organizers said. Registered families can receive groceries for the first week of school, organizers said.

All items will be given away on a first-come, first served basis.

Parent Resources

The student information system used in Decatur is Infinite Campus. Parent and student portals are available through the system.

On Infinite Campus, the following can be found: attendance, schedules, grades, major assessment scores and contact preferences. The app can be downloaded onto iPhone and Androids.
