Decatur Police to Wear Body Cameras

The cameras will be placed inside officers' vests and can be activated via voice or remote control.

Decatur police officers will soon be sporting body cameras after the Decatur City Commission approved the purchase of several dozen such devices.

Officers will receive 42 body cameras and 32 GPS devices which will be installed in the trunks of patrol cars to help pinpoint officers in distress, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The body cameras can be activated via voice or remote control. The total expenditure is $173,477 over a three-year period.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Ross tells Patch that the department has no official statements to make on the purchase; Chief Mike Booker tells the AJC that the purchase will increase accountability and professionalism.
