DeKalb, Decatur School Schedules Set After GA's Winter Storm

School officials in DeKalb County and Decatur have decided whether or not to open campuses on Wednesday as wintry weather lingers in GA.

DECATUR, GA — Schools in DeKalb County and Decatur will close Wednesday, a day after a southern winter storm brought freezing temperatures and snow to Georgia.

Additionally, Dunwoody city officials said the municipal court will close on Wednesday, and rescheduling notices will be distributed.

DeKalb County

DeKalb County schools will shift to an asynchronous learning day. School officials on Tuesday said the change was made in response to the "prolonged" winter conditions.

"This decision ensures the continued safety of students, staff and families while promoting instructional continuity," school officials said in a news release.

Students can independently complete assignments with guidance from their teachers, school officials said. School staff will remotely work.

School activities and athletic events will be canceled for the second consecutive day, school officials said.

The DeKalb County Board of Education will hold virtual meetings, one at 9 a.m. for the E-SPLOST Contract Award and another at 10 a.m. for the first public hearing to opt out of House Bill 581.

Instructions for joining the meetings are on the school district's website.

Furthermore, the DeKalb County Sanitation Division released the updated sanitation schedule:

  • Monday customers will now be serviced on Thursday, Jan. 23.
  • Tuesday customers will now be serviced on Friday, Jan. 24.
  • Wednesday customers will now be serviced on Saturday, Jan. 25.
  • Thursday customers will now be serviced on Sunday, Jan. 26.

Decatur City

Decatur school officials said a virtual learning day will end at noon, while athletic events and after-school activities will be canceled.

Information about virtual learning activities will be emailed to families, school officials said.

The opt-out hearing for House Bill 581 will be held virtually at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday via Zoom. The Decatur Board of Education's community meeting will be hosted virtually from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday.
