Patch Poll: Which Decatur Rail Crossing Is The Most Dangerous?

In light of Friday's train-car collision, what can be done to make the crossings safert?

Driving over railroad crossings is a fact of life in Decatur -- as is the lingering fear that someday, somehow a car and a train will collide.

On Friday afternoon, this fear came true. A train struck the rear end of a Lexus at the South McDonough Street crossing.

The Twitter world went crazy for an hour or so, fuled by the proximity of the tracks to several schools. (No matter that Decatur schools were out last week for winter break.)

In reality, nobody was killed. The 76-year-old driver complained of pain and was taken to the hospital. A juvenile passenger was not hurt.

So far, Decatur police have not revealed details about what caused the accident to happen.
