Here are the top five stories today in Douglasville:
- On Aug. 23, a veteran New York firefighter, Albert Rivenburgh, helped 18 Douglas County School students get off a school bus after being involved in a head-on crash in Douglas County. According to Douglas County School police, the driver of the gray Ford Windstar van appeared to lose control at a curve along Mount Vernon Road and crashed into the school bus, which started a fire. Rivenburgh extinguished the fire and helped the children off the bus. Six of the students from Shoals Elementary School went to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the van reportedly died of their injuries. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
- The Douglas County Transfer Station is closed from Aug. 24 through Aug. 27 for repairs. The station will re-open on Aug. 29. View the link for more information, including load limitations during the closure. (Press Release Desk)
- Atlanta Police Department investigators have asked the public to report any information on 24-year-old Allahnia "Fruity" Lenoir's disappearance. Allahnia was last seen on Jul. 31 at a midtown Atlanta apartment complex at 1660 Peachtree Street. Her mother, who last saw Allahnia at their Douglasville home, and her family believe she was abducted. (11 Alive News)
- Raissa Kengne, who owns a property and an abandoned home in Douglasville along with a condo at 1280 West Peachtree Street, was denied bond on Aug. 23 after allegedly killing two men on Aug. 22. The hundreds of pages of court documents that Kengne filed in the past two years show her issues with BDO, the accounting and consulting firm where she worked until November 2021, and the property management company at 1280 West Peachtree Street. Wesley Freeman, who worked at BDO, and Michael Shinners, the general manager for the condo association where Kengne lived, were both fatally shot at 1100 Peachtree Street. (11 Alive News)
- Georgia's six-week abortion law is among the strictest in the country. On Jun. 24, seven Georgia district attorneys, including current Douglas County DA Dalia Racine, wrote a collective statement declaring they would not seek criminal prosecutions against people who seek or provide abortions. The letter stated, "We stand together in our firm belief that prosecutors have a responsibility to refrain from using limited criminal legal system resources to criminalize personal medical decisions."
