Alexander High Students Shine During Law Enforcement Internship

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA – Alexander High School seniors Courtney Hause and Tyler Benson and Junior Kate Mitcham are participating in a competitive internship program that coincides with their academic success in AHS’s Law Enforcement Services Program.

Students enrolled in a Career Technical Agriculture Education pathway, which includes Law Enforcement, take a sequence of courses designed to help them build beneficial knowledge and skills as they leave high school and work toward either a post-secondary degree or gain an entry-level job in the career field. To enhance their classroom learning, students may have an opportunity to participate in a job internship.

The Douglas County School System houses this program within the Work-Based Learning programs, or WBL, where structured experiences connect the student’s career goal and classroom learning with a productive work environment. WBL provides students with opportunities for instruction in occupational skills and career exploration, and guidance in identifying employment and educational goals. Students have the opportunity to connect what they learn in school with worksite application.

Hause and Benson are interning with the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, while Mitcham interns for The Pilgrim Law firm, located in Villa Rica and Carrollton. The internship program is a partnership between employers, employees, AHS, students, and parents that allows students to gain exposure to various aspects of the industry.

After completing the Law and Justice/Criminal investigations pathways, these Alexander students are familiar with the field of law and legal research and posed for career success. Mentors are now teaching them how to review criminal history, warrants, and case files; how to request 911 calls and patrol videos; and how to execute legal research. AHS Law and Justice Teacher Richard Parham expected no less than the highest praise after teaching all three students. “These young ladies always excel in the classroom and have such positive attitudes. It’s a pleasure to teach them, and I know they will be a great asset to the employer and mentors during the internship,” states Parham. The District Attorney’s office is pleased with their effort and believes that these outstanding scholars possess outstanding academic and leadership skills.
