Barney Word Sr., 99, Dies
Visitation today and services Tuesday for former part owner and operator of Georgia-Florida Motor Express.

Barney E. Word, Sr., 99, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012. He was born on June 13, 1913 in Carrollton, the son of the late Rufus Anderson Word and the late Mary Lena Blackwelder Word. Mr. Word was part owner and operator of the Georgia-Florida Motor Express for many years and worked for M.R. and R. for 20 years. He was a Baptist by faith.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 75 years, Opal Wilson Word, on May 8, 2010.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Diane Word of Douglasville, Barney and Carolyn Word, Jr. of Douglasville, Dennis and Peggy Word of Dawsonville; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jo and Mike Holcomb of Chatsworth, Pat and Bill Kerley of Hiawassee, Brenda and Charles Maynard of Hiawassee; sisters, Ubie Turner, Maureen Williams and Wilma Williams; brothers, R. L. Word, Mack Word and Robert Word; 16 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012 at 11 a.m. from Hightower's Memorial Chapel, with Reverend Terry Braswell officiating. Music will be rendered by Jerry Braswell.
Interment will follow in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in the Tyus Community.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, August 27, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
