Douglas County Schools Participate In Tome Society Competitions

Six Douglas County school participated in the Tome Society Competitions for the first time to highlight literacy strengths of students.

From Douglas County Schools:This year six schools from Douglas County participated for the first time in Tome Society competitions. Tome Society is a student literary organization that sponsors reading activities and competitions based on the “It List,” a list compiled by the society of clean, entertaining, and encouraging literature for children and young adults.

After students prepared and took three online exams during the school year, the top four teams in the state for middle school and high school from the online competition qualified to compete in the face to face competition at TomeCon. Students also had the opportunity to participate in 24 different individual events ranging from poetry to art to app creation. The face to face and individual competitions took place at the University of North Georgia’s Gainesville campus on March 14. Students also had the opportunity to meet authors of a few of the books that were on the It List this year. Douglas County was well represented and walked away with the awards listed below.

"The competitions highlight the various strengths of our students,” said Douglas County High School Media Specialist Kristy Herlihy. “It isn't just memorizing book facts in a quiz bowl style anymore. Students can create works of art about the books, develop video book reviews, and complete technology based projects. As we move forward our goal is to have more student participation every year. Next year the elementary schools will have a chance to participate, so it is a very exciting time for literacy within the county."
