Here are the top five stories in Douglasville today:

  1. The veteran suicide crisis across the country is a major issue - but one woman in Georgia is determined to make a difference. Holly McCarthy lost her husband, Army veteran Matt McCarthy, to suicide in 2020. Wishing to honor Matt's memory and help other veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress and other mental health issues, McCarthy began holding Jeep and motorcycle rides to raise money and awareness. On Sep. 24, a new ride will begin in Lithia Springs in Douglas County and conclude at the American Legion Post in Douglasville. There will be numerous events at both locations throughout the day, so register while you still have a chance, and support veterans in need. (fox28media.com)
  2. There are numerous new homes for sale throughout the Douglasville area for those interested in becoming homeowners. The properties that have been listed include a two-bedroom, one-bathroom home that would be well suited for a smaller family. For those who need a little more space, there's also a three-bedroom, two-bathroom on the market. For a list of other recently listed homes or to schedule a viewing with a realtor, click the link. 3. There's no better time than now to rescue a shelter animal and add another member to the family. The Douglas County Animal Shelter has an assortment of different animals, from cats and dogs to more exotic options, that are in need of loving homes. There are dozens of animals to choose from, whether you're looking for a cuddly cat or a dog who loves to take long walks. Take a look at some of the pets that are up for adoption, and see if one might be the perfect match for you. (Douglasville Patch)
  4. The Douglas County branches of the West Georgia Regional Library System have plenty of events coming up, and there's something for everyone. Head over to the Bowden branch for LEGOS at the library on Sep. 26, or enjoy Romance Book Club at the Carrollton Branch. The library website has a complete list of library events happening at the Dog River, Douglas County, and Lithia Springs branches. (West Georgia Regional Library System)
  5. It's the final weekend of September Sundays in Douglas County, and everyone is going all out in a big celebration. There will be carnival rides, food trucks, music, games, and much more.
