  1. The Douglas County School System and The Rouse Foundation are collaborating to help elementary schoolers in Douglas County practice healthy eating habits with their Mini Chef Academy program. It was such a success last year with students, parents, and teachers showing great enthusiasm about what they were learning, they decided to bring it back again. The program teaches students how to grow, harvest, and cook their own meals, and seeks to remind students they are in control of their diet and exercise habits. (Douglas County School System)
  2. As marijuana becomes legal throughout the country, the Georgia court has stalled medical production of the product again. Since the state has suspended growing licenses from two major production companies, this makes the drug illegal to buy even though it is technically legal in the state. This is due to the fact nobody is growing it in the state, so it cannot be sold. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  3. The Douglas County Parks and Recreation's Fall Break Baseball/Softball Camp will take place on Monday, Oct. 10. The camp is for players between the ages of six and 13, and all skill levels are welcome to participate. The camp will take place at Deer Lick Park and will last from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with drinks and snacks being provided by the camp. Those interested can register online; the fee is $70. 4. Are you a Halloween fanatic? Nightmare’s Gate, a Haunted House in Douglasville, has been named one of the scariest haunted houses in the Atlanta area. There are three exhibits: the General Hospital, Terror Falls Swamp, and the Longview Estate. With tickets starting at $25, you can gather your bravest friends for a thrilling night out, without leaving town. (Access Atlanta)
  5. Douglas County School System students will now be able to have access to the West Regional Public Library System with their student ID numbers. The ID number can be used to activate a free PLAY Card account – a youth library account that gives kids access to library resources without any late fees or charges. Not only will students be able to check out up to five items at a time, but the program also offers SAT practice exams, language learning, and more educational resources at no cost.
