Here are the top five stories today in Douglasville:

  1. The Tyler Fairley Foundation has announced the recipients of its two 2022 scholarships: Christopher Abell, Jr. and Mitchell Moutrie. The Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization based in Douglasville. The Foundation was organized and named after the late Tyler Fairley, a former football player with Douglas County High School. (Douglas County Sentinel, Subscription)
  2. Madden Sanker of Douglasville committed to Louisville back in July and has become the highest-rated offensive lineman commit in program history. Sanker had also received offers from Miami, Arkansas, and Michigan State along with 25 scholarship offers. Sanker is ranked at No. 115 nationally overall and is the No. 3 interior offensive lineman. Sanker and his team at South Paulding won their first game of the season, but are currently on a losing streak. (247Sports)
  3. Chestnut Log Middle School has kicked off the college football season with AVID College Day, an initiative to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college. Faculty and students at CLMS represented their favorite colleges and universities in a spirited day of academic pride. The fun event encouraged students to be thinking about universities and which ones might be important to them. Chestnut Log incorporates an AVID College Day bi-monthly during the school year. 4. Members of CHHS’ Naval Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NJROTC) program raise and lower the flag every day, but did so with particular reverence in light of the 9/11 Memorial. “Our flag represents the strength of the country,” said senior Nick Muldrow. New members of NJROTC spent their summers learning to properly raise, lower, and care for the flag. Students must be able to march in step along with proper flag handling. 5. The Cultural Arts Council of Douglas County is presenting the National Juried Art Show throughout the month. This year's show is judged by full-time studio and exhibiting artist Carrie Penley; visual artist and creator of Black Art in America, Najee Dorsey; and international award-winning fine art photographer, Jennifer Cardinell. Other events with the Council of Arts include workshops, studio projects, slide lectures, speakers and other educational programs. (Council of the Arts | Douglas County)
